Sri Lanka in 10 Days: Temples, Tea Country & Surf Beaches

Sri Lanka fits extraordinary variety into an island no larger than Ireland. Ancient temples, dense jungle national parks, tea-covered mountains, whale watching from clifftops and some of the best surf in Asia — all accessible within a 10-day trip. It is, by some margin, the best value adventure destination in Asia.

The 10-Day Route

Days 1–2: Colombo & Negombo

Land at Bandaranaike International Airport. Negombo (25min) is the most practical first night. Colombo's Pettah market, Galle Face Green at sunset, and Barefoot Gallery on Galle Road.

Days 3–4: The Cultural Triangle — Sigiriya & Dambulla

Sigiriya Rock Fortress — a 5th-century royal palace perched on a 200m volcanic plug, with frescoes of celestial nymphs still intact after 1,500 years. Climb before 7am.

Dambulla Cave Temple — five cave temples with 153 Buddha statues and ceiling frescoes covering 2,100 square metres. One of the finest Buddhist temple complexes in Asia.

Day 5: Polonnaruwa — the Ancient City

Polonnaruwa was Sri Lanka's medieval capital. Bicycle between ruined palaces, enormous Buddha statues and sacred shrines — a UNESCO World Heritage Site that very few people visit compared with Sigiriya.

Days 6–7: Kandy & the Hill Country

Temple of the Tooth (Sri Dalada Maligawa) — houses a relic of the Buddha's tooth; the most sacred Buddhist site in Sri Lanka. The evening puja (offering ceremony) at 6:30pm is extraordinary.

Take the scenic railway from Kandy to Ella (7h) — routinely listed among the world's most beautiful train journeys. Tea plantations, waterfalls, bridges over misty gorges.

Days 8–9: Ella & Tea Country

Little Adam's Peak (sunrise hike; 2h return). Nine Arch Bridge at dawn. Tea factory tour at a Haputale estate.

Day 10: South Coast — Unawatuna or Mirissa

End with a beach day. Mirissa for whale watching (blue whales, sperm whales; December–April peak). Unawatuna for snorkelling and good cheap seafood.

Where to Stay

Cultural Triangle (Boutique): Water Garden Sigiriya is a stunning collection of water-villa suites set around lotus ponds opposite the Sigiriya rock — sunrise views of the fortress from your private deck.

Kandy (Mid-range): Kings Pavilion overlooks the Kandy Lake and surrounding hills from a converted colonial-era mansion. Pool, gardens and genuinely warm hospitality.

Ella (Boutique): 98 Acres Resort & Spa — tea-estate bungalows spread across 98 acres of working tea plantation, with a beautiful infinity pool overlooking the valley. One of Sri Lanka's most beautiful properties.

South Coast (Eco-Luxury): Amanwella near Tangalle — Aman's Sri Lanka outpost on a private cove, with pool villas hidden in the dunes. Exceptional whale-watching proximity.
