Table Mountain
Take the rotating cable car to the summit for 360-degree views across the Peninsula, the Cape of Good Hope, and — on clear days — beyond. Walk back down via Platteklip Gorge (2h; easier than the up-route).
V&A Waterfront & Robben Island
The working harbour has been beautifully redeveloped. The Robben Island ferry (book ahead) takes 45 minutes and the tour of Nelson Mandela's prison cell, led by former prisoners, is one of the most moving experiences in Africa.
Cape Peninsula Day Drive
Chapman's Peak Drive (toll road), Cape Point (the meeting of the Atlantic and Indian Oceans — though technically Cape Agulhas is the true southernmost point), and Boulders Beach penguin colony. Allow a full day.
Wine Country
Stellenbosch and Franschhoek are 45 minutes from Cape Town. Franschhoek's main street is a Michelin-standard restaurant row — exceptional South African cuisine with world-class wines.
The Garden Route
George to Knysna
George is the Garden Route's main airport hub. Drive to Knysna (60km), stopping at Wilderness Beach (the best surf beach on the route) and the Knysna Lagoon.
Knysna
The town straddles a lagoon protected by dramatic sandstone heads. Tsitsikamma Forest nearby contains some of Africa's last ancient yellowwood trees.
Port Elizabeth (Gqeberha) & Addo Elephant National Park
End the Garden Route with a safari — Addo, 75km from Port Elizabeth, has the highest elephant density of any park in Africa.
